Conclusions
- The fixeds bed system supplied by IWS has proven to be a suitable technology for the requirements at Scott Base
- The system is compact, with the 122PE system being fully contained within two ISO20 containers
- The modular design allows the system to treat variable wastewater loads from 2-20m3/day, and the system can be easily extended if required in future
- Servicing of the system when required can be carried out during operation
- The power consumption is low at approximately 7Kw
- There are no moving parts within the treatment basins which provides for high reliability and low maintenance
- The system can accommodate variable inputs and transient high loads and operates with high detergent and salt concentrations (up to 30% sea water)
- Sludge generation is low at 0.65L/person/day (at 1.5% solids)
- All treatment stages are maintained in an aerobic condition that minimises the risk of foul odours and has allowed the system to be located adjacent to the accommodation blocks
- The system has reliably produced a very high effluent quality, with BOD5 and SS concentrations typically <10mg/L and faecal coliform concentrations <10cfu/100ml exceeding the performance requirements.
